Economic Evaluation of COVID-19 Policies

CHDS faculty Ankur Pandya outlined how economic evaluation methods could be used to improve the process of making difficult policy choices around COVID-19 in a recently co-authored  Perspective in the New England Journal of Medicine. Improving ventilation in indoor spaces will likely reduce COVID-19 transmission but will require substantial costs, for example, resulting in a trade-off that can be formally assessed using economic evaluation methods. Pandya and his co-author Govind Persad (University of Denver Sturm College of Law) discuss the advantages and limitations of aggregating outcomes, such as health gains and costs, into a single metric that can be used to guide decision-making. They also discuss the role of economic evaluation in assessing uncertainty and dimensions related to health equity.
