CHDS’s Jane Kim is recipient of the Marianne Wessling-Resnick Memorial Mentoring Award in recognition of her mentoring of researchers and faculty at the Harvard Chan School. In conferring the award, the Committee on the Advancement of Women Faculty (CAWF) recognized Kim’s commitment, empathy, and advocacy for empowering women to assert themselves. The committee also recognized Kim’s leadership at the school, which she handled “with grace and skill during difficult times.” Kim was appointed Academic Dean just as the COVID-19 pandemic was beginning and was instrumental in the school’s support of students and faculty during that time. More recently, Kim stepped-in as interim Dean during the search for the current Dean.
In accepting the award, Kim was “truly stunned” when she found out and felt that it was one of the most meaningful awards in her career. She noted that it was her work with CAWF that motivated her interest in leadership and remembered that she served with Wessling-Resnick on the faculty committee before Wessling-Resnick’s passing. Kim gave credit to the many people who taught her to mentor through their mentorship of her, including Sue Goldie.
The Marianne Wessling-Resnick Memorial Mentoring Award recognizes a member of the Harvard Chan School community who has significantly contributed to the advancement of women faculty and researchers at the School. It was established in honor of Dr. Marianne Wessling-Resnick, the first tenured faculty member in the Department of Nutrition and a founding member of the Department of Genetics and Complex Diseases (now the Department of Molecular Metabolism). When, in 2019, CAWF presented her their Mentoring Award, they acknowledged her “major positive impact on the careers of many faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and students” and that she was a “generous coach to those under her mentorship who have difficult decisions to make.”
