CHDS congratulates affiliated faculty Ole Norheim on being appointed to chair the new National Council for Priority Setting and Sustainability in Health and Social Care Services established under the Norwegian government’s Ministry of Health and Care Services. The new council will act as a national forum for strategic and policy-level discussions on priority issues and long-term sustainability in the Norwegian healthcare sector. The goal is to “strengthen public debate, foster a shared understanding of the situation among stakeholders, and provide input to the government on developments, dilemmas, and measures that can enhance the sustainability of public services.”

Norheim is the Mary B. Saltonstall Professor of Ethics and Population Health in the Department of Global Health and Population at the Harvard Chan School and an Adjunct Researcher at the Bergen Centre for Ethics and Priority Setting in Health at the University of Bergen, Norway, which he co-founded. His research addresses theories of distributive justice, inequality in health, priority setting in health systems, decision science, distributional cost-effectiveness analysis, and universal health coverage in low- and middle-income countries. He is an elected member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. He has served as Head of the Norwegian Biotechnology Advisory Board (2019–23), as chair of the World Health Organization’s Consultative Group on Equity and Universal Health Coverage (2012–14), and on the third Norwegian National Committee on Priority Setting in Health Care (2013–14).
