Gen-AI Use in HTA

CHDS faculty Jagpreet Chhatwal and collaborator Rachael Fleurence examined how the principles outlined in the 2025 HTAi Global Policy Forum (GPF) report could be applied in operational practice. Their recent article discussed where generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) may support specific health technology assessment (HTA) activities and how HTA organizations can evaluate, oversee, and manage the use of these tools as adoption progresses.

The authors highlighted that GenAI provides the most value for specific, well-defined tasks rather than replacing entire HTA workflows, and should be used alongside human experts. Examples of effective tasks include literature reviews and structured data extractions. The authors noted that approaches in which AI systems perform all steps of a systematic review without human involvement continued to present challenges related to validation, transparency, reproducibility, and methodological standards.

They concluded that when thoughtfully integrated and evaluated, GenAI may help improve efficiency and accuracy for HTA processes.
