Reductions in mortality risk can be achieved by retrofitting Mexico City’s diesel trucks and buses with particulate filters – that was the topic of faculty member James Hammitt’s presentation at the Society for Risk Analysis annual conference in Arlington, VA on December 10-14, 2017. Comparisons of the monetary benefits of the risk reduction with the capital and operating costs of the filters differ by vehicle type, but for the vehicles that contribute the most to air-pollution-related mortality risk, the benefits of retrofits appear to be substantially larger than the costs. This project follows recommendations for conducting benefit-cost analysis in low- and middle-income countries being developed in a project led by Lisa Robinson, James Hammitt, Dean Jamison and David DeFeranti.
