Beate Jahn, PhD, long term visitor and CHDS collaborator, was named 2024 President-elect of the Society for Medical Decision Making in the recent election for 2024 – 2025 Officers and Trustees.
Jahn is an Associate Professor and Senior Scientist in the Institute of Public Health, Medical Decision Making and Health Technology Assessment at UMIT TIROL – University for Health Sciences and Technology. She was a visiting scholar at institutions such as McMaster University, University of Toronto, and BGU Israel. As a dedicated teacher she has offered courses at academic institutions worldwide, including the US, Germany, India, and Brazil, in industry, and at SMDM, including short courses across Europe, South and North America, and Asia.
Jahn’s research spans the spectrum of medical decision-making consisting of decision analysis, health economics, quality-of-life assessment, decision aids for patient decision-making, and translating modeling results into policy and patient empowerment. She applies her expertise to evaluate strategies in prevention, treatment, and disease management, including areas such as chronic heart failure, COVID-19 interventions, cancer screening, and patient engagement, through systematic tools that provide balanced benefit-risk information integrating patient values and equity concerns. She collaborates with government health care decision-making bodies and HTA organizations in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland.
Currently serving as the Co-Chair of SMDM’s Diversity, Anti-Racism, and Inclusion Team (DART) and a member of the Education Committee, Jahn’s goals as President-elect are enhancing SMDM sustainability, promoting education and networking, and fostering forward-thinking Open Research and AI integration.
SMDM is an organization working to improve health and clinical care of individuals and populations through advancement of systematic methods to address decision-making. SMDM holds annual meetings, publishes two journals (Medical Decision Making and open access Medical Decision Making Policy & Practice), and maintains a website with member access to networking opportunities, education & career tools. SMDM offers short courses in topics such as decision analysis and decision-analytic modeling, cost-effectiveness analysis, shared decision making, and psychology of medical decision making, and holds annual meetings in North America, Europe and Asia.
