CHDS at 2026 SMDM Meeting

CHDS contributed in many ways to the 48th Annual Meeting of the Society for Medical Decision Making (SMDM), held in Oslo, Norway, from June 28 to July 1, 2026. The meeting theme was “Medical Decision Making in Uncertain Times.” CHDS’s Emily Burger and Akershus University Hospital’s Torbjørn Wisløff chaired the meeting.

CHDS faculty received accolades during the meeting: CHDS faculty Uwe Siebert received the Career Achievement Award in recognition of his significant contributions to the field of medical decision making, and Jagpreet Chhatwal and collaborator Rachael Fleurence received the John M. Eisenberg Award recognizing their impactful work on hepatitis C elimination.

Several CHDS PhD students presented their research: Jenna Rogers was a Lee B. Lusted Student Prize finalist for her research, “Clinical Outcomes and Cost-Effectiveness of Early Breast Cancer Prevention for Childhood Lymphoma Survivors Previously Treated with Chest Radiotherapy.” Andrea Luviano delivered an oral presentation on “Different Definitions of Obesity – Time to Waist or Waste of Time?” and Sarah Skye Yoden presented a poster on “Modeling Cooling Strategies for Urban Elderly Residents in the US: Calibration to Mortality and Emergency Department Visit Data.”

CHDS also contributed to invited sessions and short courses. PhD candidate Jacob Jameson served as short course co-chair, and CHDS faculty Ankur Pandya, President-Elect of SMDM, was a featured speaker in the session, “Cost-per-QALY Thresholds: Supply-Side? Demand-Side? On the Side?”

Siebert served as moderator and Pandya served as the SMDM representative for the invited SMDM–ISPOR Collaborative Session, “Frontiers in Modeling – Causal Modeling: Can Decision Models Answer ‘What If’ Without Causal Inference?” Siebert also co-instructed the short course “Causal Diagrams, Target Trial Emulation and Causal Inference for Modeling and Medical Decision Making,” and participated in the symposium “Navigating Uncertainty in Population-Adjusted Indirect Treatment Comparisons.”
