Maria (Myriam) Hunink, MD, PhD was honored for her career achievements at a symposium and celebratory event held at the Nieuwe Instituut, Rotterdam, the Netherlands last month.
The symposium brought together faculty, trainees, and colleagues from Hunink’s 30-year tenure in decision science, epidemiology, and radiology. Colleagues from her home institution, Erasmus MC, Rotterdam, moderated the event, including Marion Smits on Challenges in Healthcare and Kamran Ikram on Societal Challenges that Impact Health.
Harvard Chan School colleagues Milton Weinstein, Henry J. Kaiser Research Professor of Health Policy and Management, Emeritus, and CHDS faculty director Sue J. Goldie, Roger Irving Lee Professor of Public Health, joined the event virtually. In their video message, Weinstein and Goldie reflected on Hunink’s devotion to mentorship, education, and her longtime contributions to Harvard Chan School’s Center for Health Decision Science (CHDS), where Hunink serves as core faculty. “Myriam has been such a core contributor to our faculty,” Goldie shared, continuing, “She’s been a part of our students’ lives. She’s been a mentor. She’s been a true community member […] And so for that, just intensely grateful for her contributions.” Goldie and Weinstein included personal stories about their 30-year professional and personal friendship with Hunink, Weinstein sharing, “Myriam is just the kindest, most generous person.” Goldie and Weinstein also reflected on the decision science field as a whole, including its history, evolution to the present, and its future.
Additional symposium speakers included: Stijntje Dijk (AIOS Radiologie), Bart Ferket (Mount Sinai), Kirsten Fleischmann (University of California-San Francisco), Tessa Genders (University of Colorado, Denver), Carola Hein (TU Delft), Arfan Ikram (Erasmus MC), Karin Karis, Eline Krijkamp (Erasmus University, Rotterdam), Edwin Oei (Erasmus MC), Uwe Siebert (UMIT-TIROL and Harvard Chan School), and John Wong (Tufts University).

Hunink, a skilled pianist, is often found performing when a piano is provided for her. Appropriately, Hunink’s symposium was accompanied by musical performances that reflected Hunink’s deep connection to classical music.
